THE PRESENT OF MEDELLIN

According to the latest numbers delivered by Dane. Medellin has 2.7million people, and along with the other close towns that belong to the Aburra Valley, has over 3.5 million people, is the 2^nd urban agglomeration in Colombia and is considered the 91th agglomeration in the urban world.

After having a violent past in the 70’s and 80’s Medellin has changed dramatically since the end of SXIX and now is quite different that those dark times.

Medellin wants to be known as a Business Centers of Latin America. According to a recent study paid by Citi Bank, is already number ten in the region in terms of doing business, this despite the fact that most the others are capitals.

The mayor office and the living voices of the city have participated in this transformation and along with a great effort of investment in education and social culture, there has been improvements in terms of services, roads, broad band internet and many others.

In addition to this, the city that has always been and industrial Pole, has expanded its possibilities, with two fair airports, a great new Conventions Park called Plaza Mayor, and an interesting positioning of the city in the main global institutions and discussions, starting with the Latin American context but also going  global.

Medellin has today to much to offer. Is excellent in terms of economic institutions, financial services, investors protection, credit acquisition, taxes, facilities in order to either importing or exporting and enforcing contracts.

This change in the general tranquility of the city has made Medellin also a very attractive place to visit, in fact  according to the mayors office the number of visitors from 2010 to 2011 increased in 97.84 %, the visitors come mainly from USA, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, New Zeeland, Japan, Canada, Ecuador, Mexico and Turkey. The hotel occupation reached in 2011 levels of 74% increasing nearly 5%. Some of the events and fairs that are made in Medellin are a regional an reference, Colombiamoda and Colombiatex, the most important fashion fairs of the Andean Economies, FISE the fair of the Energy Sector in which Colombia has steped out as regional Power and some others made in recent years such as the BID annual meeting, have made the visit to Medellin more frequent destination for all.

Besides this the excellent weather that the city enjoys, an average of 24 Call year long and the excellent health and caring institutions has made many vets and retaired people to choose Medellin as their place to enjoy their last years.
