In an era that technology has emerged with 3D TV’s and the piracy in the burned CD’s are sold in every corner, Colombia’s film business is getting outstanding numbers.
The film law of Colombia has given local and international film producers many reasons to make movies in Colombia.
In the middle of this situation, Colombia has emerged as a very good market for the movies industry and the numbers confirm this: In a country of 45 million people in 2011 went to theatres 38 million 84.4% of the population and according to Proimagenes in 2012 that number will climb to 41 million Colombians.
Just to show that the tendency is correct, in the first semester 2012 entered 20 million 200k people to movie theatres. The business already means 300 billion COP a year.
The business in Colombia is managed by 5 companies that concentrate 90% of the market, these are: Cine Colombia, Cinemark, Royal Films, Procinal and Cinépolis. Some of them with over 80 years in the market, some others very young but with great investments.
The market is dynamic and the companies are searching for more opportunities to expand their market share, that’s mainly why they are investing in medium size cities like Pasto, Yopal or Buga and also improving their portfolio with great investments, especially in 3D theatres.
Making promotions and alliances like the one they have with Exito group, Coca Cola or El Colombiano to change movie tickets for other products of those companies have also taken spectators to theatres. Also the great amounts of premiers that these couples of years have had are making the business even better.
